Money Math

We continued our work with money math this week.  During a recent Math Workshop we looked at a five frame and filled it with five pennies  Then we talked about the different addition number sentences we could use to get to 5.  We also talked about how people use money to buy food, and we opened up a grocery store in our block  area.  The children paid for the items with dimes and nickels. The cashier had the job of giving them their change.  They used five frames and ten frames to help them figure out how to make the correct change.  This seemingly simple task is quite challenging for some, because they have to accept that one thing is actually 5 things, and another thing is actually 10 things.  Even if they internalize this counterintuitive concept, it is still hard to get that if you pay 7 cents for an item and pay with a dime, then you should get 3 pennies back.  We continue to reinforce the idea with the children that being in a position of uncertainty is exciting.  It means that new learning is about to occur, and we all know that getting smarter is really fun!
