Parent Visits

We are so lucky to be part of a community that honors and represents diversity in different ways.   In our classroom Sameerah's mom, Jamila, and Sameerah's Grandmom gave us the opportunity to experience the traditions of the Indo-Carribean celebration of Diwali, an Indian festival of lights.  There is a strong presence of Indian culture in Trinidad where Jamila grew up.  The children watched a slide show about the history of the mixing of the native and Indian cultures, and then they got to chose a decorative diya to light.

They also helped to decorate a Rangoli (A design that is meant to be a welcoming area for Lakshmi - a Hindu deity)  The children used glitter, and lentils and other objects to fill in the Rangoli, and they were all so proud of their beautiful finished product.  Several diyas were lit and placed on the Rangoli, and we shared a moment of silence together and sent a wish for peace out into the world.

Chris Pinto, GK's dad, came in and read two versions of "Twas The Night Before Christmas".  First he read a traditional version of the story, and then he read, "Cajun Night Before Christmas".  In this version, St Nick is pulled on a boat by alligators!  Chris read this story to us in an impressively authentic cajun style!!  The children were enchanted.

Please remember that our door is always open to you to come in and share a favorite story, craft, activity, or a family tradition.  Let us know if you would like to schedule a time when you can come in for a sharing!
